Georgia is growing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Georgia has a population of approximately 10.7 million residents.

But behind that growth is a health crisis that too many families are living with quietly.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reports that approximately 1.1 million adults in Georgia, or 11.4% of the adult population, are living with diagnosed diabetes. It also estimates that about 63,000 adults have diabetes but remain undiagnosed.

That means more than 1.16 million adults in Georgia are either diagnosed or believed to be living with diabetes without knowing it.

That is not just a medical statistic.

That is a church member.

 A grandparent.

 A coworker.

 A neighbor.

 A spouse.

 A friend.

And many of them are still waiting for someone to help them before the diagnosis becomes a crisis.

The Story Behind the Numbers

Diabetes does not usually arrive overnight.

For many people, it starts quietly.

A little more weight around the waist.

A little more fatigue after lunch.

A little more thirst.

A little more brain fog.

A little less movement.

A few more doctor’s visits.

Then one day, the lab results come back.

Blood sugar is high.

The word “prediabetes” appears.

Then, for too many families, the next word becomes Type 2 diabetes.

And that is where the story changes.

Because now the conversation becomes medication, monitoring, complications, and fear.

But here is what we believe:

The best time to fight diabetes is before it becomes diabetes.

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes — Explained Simply

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes — Explained Simply

Let’s make this easy enough for a fifth grader to understand.

Your body uses sugar from food for energy.

But sugar needs help getting out of your blood and into your cells.

That helper is called insulin.

Think of insulin like a key.

The key opens the door so sugar can leave the blood and enter the cells.

Type 1 Diabetes

With Type 1 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin.

So the key is missing.

That means sugar gets stuck in the blood.

People with Type 1 usually need insulin because their body cannot make enough on its own.

Type 2 Diabetes

With Type 2 diabetes, the body usually still makes insulin.

But the body stops listening to it.

The key is there…

…but the lock is not working well anymore.

That means sugar stays in the blood longer than it should.

Over time, this can hurt the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and circulation.

The encouraging part is this:

Type 2 diabetes is often preventable, and lifestyle change can make a major difference.

The Bigger Crisis: The People Who Don’t Know Yet

Now step back and look at Georgia.

We have more than 10.7 million people living in this state.

We already know approximately 1.1 million adults are diagnosed with diabetes, and about 63,000 more adults may have diabetes and not know it yet.

But that still does not capture the full problem.

Because before diabetes comes years of warning signs:

  • Weight gain

  • High blood pressure

  • Low energy

  • Poor eating patterns

  • Lack of movement

  • Inflammation

  • Prediabetes

  • Insulin resistance

This is where 50for50Club believes the real work begins.

Not after someone is already sick.

But while there is still time to change the story.
